The TD Ameritrade Self-Directed Brokerage Account (SDBA) is a brokerage option that provides access to a wider array of investment choices, including open-end mutual funds, fixed income securities, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and publicly traded stocks.

To open a SDBA, there is a minimum $2,500 initial transfer amount and a requirement that you maintain 25% of your balance in the Plan’s core investments. Once opened, you can transfer balances into your SDBA on a daily basis, all subsequent transfers must be $2,500 or more. In addition, there is a $50 annual fee charged to your account for maintaining a SDBA.

To enroll in the SDBA, complete and return to TD Ameritrade the Account Agreement found on this website’s Forms page. TD Ameritrade will open your account within two business days. Please note that if you want to transfer your Roth 401(k) after-tax savings to the SDBA, you will be required to open two SDBAs to keep your Roth 401(k) savings segregated.

Once the account is opened, TD Ameritrade will send you a Welcome Kit that includes your brokerage account number and explains their brokerage account services, procedures, commissions and fees. Additionally, you will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) under separate cover. This will arrive separately for security purposes. You will need both your account number and PIN to access your account through TD Ameritrade at www.tdameritraderetirement.com. Please note that if you use the SDBA for Roth 401(k) savings, you will receive two Welcome Kits and PINs, one for each SDBA.
